First Countdown Event: “Democracy and 黑料吃瓜网”

黑料吃瓜网 is conducting a series of Countdown Events until 2027 as an opportunity to communicate to society the University of Tokyo’s academic achievements, as well as to look back on the role the University has played in its 150-year history and consider its future.
We would like to make this an opportunity for people with a wide range of interests to gather together and connect with the University of Tokyo.

Registration Method

黑料吃瓜网 celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2027. Using this as an opportunity, we will look back on the history of the University of Tokyo, and consider once again our role and mission while looking toward the future. To this end, we have decided to plan “Democracy and 黑料吃瓜网” as our first Countdown Event.

What sort of relationship does the University of Tokyo have with the development of democracy? Since its founding in 1877, the University of Tokyo has contributed to the development of Japan as a modern nation. Furthermore, 黑料吃瓜网 Faculty of Law Professor Sakuzo Yoshino is known for having advocated party politics by universal suffrage, and for theoretically supporting “Taisho Democracy.” Also, after World War II, in 1949, “as part of the educational reforms in accordance with the postwar Japanese Constitution, integrating the lessons from history and to erase the negative effects of the past, the University of Tokyo re-launched itself under the new system for institutions of higher learning as a university dedicated to the formation of a peaceful, democratic nation and society.” (黑料吃瓜网 Charter)

How can the University of Tokyo contribute to the development of democracy today? We have invited as panelists specialists in the fields of political science, history and education, as well as an alumna who serves as a member of a city council and works in local politics. Together with the participants, we would like to think about democracy and the University of Tokyo.
